E-fatura explained

What is eFatura?

eFatura is a government-run platform where all your invoices (or "faturas") are collected and recorded. When you make a purchase and ask for an invoice with your taxpayer number (NIF), the business sends that information to eFatura. The system then automatically updates with your spending details.


Why Should You Care?

  • Tax Deductions: By using eFatura, you can claim tax deductions on certain expenses, like healthcare, education, and general goods. These deductions reduce the amount of income tax you owe.

  • Tracking Expenses: It’s an easy way to keep an eye on where your money is going. Everything is organized online, so you can see your expenses and make sure they’re correctly categorized:

  • Simplified Tax Filing: When it’s time to file your taxes, the system pre-fills a lot of the information for you, making the process quicker and less stressful.


How Do You Use It?

  1. Register and Log In: You can access eFatura through the Portuguese tax authority’s website. https://faturas.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt/home.action

  2. Check Your Invoices: Once logged in, you can see all your invoices. You can verify that they’re correctly categorized (e.g., healthcare, education) and even add or correct details if needed. If you have an activity open, you will also have to select whether the invoice is a business expense or personal expense. ATTENTION: If you do not verify your invoices, they won´t be added to your tax deductions.

  3. Claim Deductions: During tax season, the eFatura system will show you the deductions you can claim based on your spending. You just need to confirm that everything looks correct before submitting your tax return.
